The Importance of Community
I recently sent an email to my mailing list that took me a month to write. Why did it take me a month to write it? I suppose you could call it extreme writer’s block. I couldn’t think of the words to say. It was awful because someone was counting on me for a response.
Guess what finally broke the writer’s block? I finally asked someone for the words! A friend gave me the opening sentence and the rest of the email flowed from there.
Why am I telling you this? I’m telling you this to emphasize the importance of community. Without that friend who gave me the opening sentence for my email, it might have taken me another month to write it. We are much stronger together. Having people in your corner to strengthen and support you is invaluable.
Don’t go it alone. Join a mastermind, network on a regular basis with a group of musicians, find some people on Meetup.com who are doing things you like to do, get into a bible study. Are you trying to reach a goal? Find a group of people who will push, motivate and drive you to accomplish your goal. Surround yourself with people who will be honest with you when you need it, but not be negative about your dream.
It is said that no man is an island. It’s also true that no artist can become successful alone. So take a breath, go through your address book, find groups on Facebook and reach out to like-minded people. Form a group that will lift you up and hold you accountable to reach your goals. It will be one of the best things you ever do for your career and life.
