Songwriting Tips & Tricks for the Busy Artist

When music is your job or your part-time hobby, it can feel more like work than play. Songwriting is one of the most important parts of being an independent music artist. Unfortunately, sometimes your well of inspiration runs dry or you’re too busy to sit down and think about writing a song. If you are a busy artist always on the go, here are some of our best tips and tricks for songwriting when you’re on the move.

Play Well with Others

Collaboration is a great way to get your songwriting juices flowing on the road or at home. If you have friends or colleagues who are also musicians, use a songwriting session as an opportunity to catch up and get some work done at the same time. Many of the best songs were written by teams or inspired during a jam session, so don’t be afraid to collaborate.

Carry Your Work with You

Most songwriters have a small journal or pocket-sized book that they use to keep track of ideas. Practice carrying paper and a pen with you wherever you go, so that you always have somewhere to jot down your latest songwriting inspiration. Do you find inspiration while driving on the road? Use voice-to-text or a notes app to keep track and never lose another melody again.

Switch Your Daily Listening Patterns

When you’re on the run, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut in terms of the music you listen to every day. If you want some songwriting inspiration on the road, change up your playlist! Try listening to a new station on the radio or another playlist on Spotify or Apple Music. Giving your mind different inputs can help to change your outputs.
