At ECHE Music, we work with many young artists to promote their music. However, even the most talented musicians can find themselves getting nowhere if they are targeting the wrong audience. The right audience will take your career to the next level, while the wrong one might make you give up altogether.
Look for a Similar Artist
Even if your music is incredibly unique, there is always another more popular artist or two that you share similarities with. If you have trouble viewing yourself objectively, don’t be afraid to ask friends or family what their opinions are. You should look for similarities in:
- Musical sound
Once you have a few artists that you are similar to, it’s time to do some research on their fans. Search Twitter to see who is mentioning the artist in their tweets. Look to see who has tagged them on Instagram. What do these fans have in common? Are they all members of similar demographics? Do they listen to other artists that are the same? Keep track of similarities and differences, and you will start to see patterns emerge.
What Does Your Target Audience Want?
Now that you know who your target audience is, you can start to determine what they want. Why do they care about the musicians that they love? Think about the answers to the following questions:
- What is their favorite website?
- What movies do they watch?
- Do they watch sports?
- What apps are on their phone?
- Where do they buy clothes and accessories from?
- Do they love to go out or stay in?
- What denomination church do they attend? Do they attend church at all?
- What are their beliefs?
- What are their goals?
- What do they see reflected in the artists that they love?
Those questions aren’t easy to answer, but if you can answer them about your fans, you will have fans for life. The fastest way to fail as a musician is trying to please everyone, so don’t! The fans whose priorities align with yours will stay loyal to your music, even if it isn’t for everyone.
